Hello and welcome to the Montezuma Audubon Center (MAC).

The MAC is a state-owned facility operated through a cooperative agreement between the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the National Audubon Society.

The Center is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. year round and the trails are open daily from dawn to dusk.

The MAC is open year-round for educational, conservation, and recreational programs for families, Scouts, home schooled children, schools, and other groups. Our largest event of the year is the Wildlife Festival held the first Saturday in May with tons of fun for the entire family.

The MAC opened it’s doors in May 2007 and has been a great addition to the Montezuma Wetlands Complex.

The Complex, the first globally significant Important Bird Area designated by the National Audubon Society, is comprised of 50,000 acres of federal, state, and private lands with a mixture of wetlands, forests, agricultural areas, and grasslands.

Due to it’s location on the Atlantic Flyway, the Complex provides essential waterfowl feeding and resting areas. Over 500,000 Canada Geese pass through the Complex each migration season. During the spring migration, flocks of hundreds of thousands of Snow Geese regularly use the area. In the late fall, American black duck numbers peak at more than 25,000 and mallards peak at 100,000. Another bird that adds to the significance of the Complex is the Cerulean Warbler, a species of concern in NY. This blue bird with white stripes on it’s wings is a bit smaller than a chickadee. During the breeding season, over 40 male Cerulean Warblers can be seen, but more likely heard, high in the trees of Montezuma’s forests. You never know what you are going to find at Montezuma but it is guaranteed to be wild!
